By Ole Wanscher for Carl Hansen & Søn
OW149-2 Colonial Sofa
The OW149-2 Colonial Sofa is a trademark interpretation of classic shapes according to modern needs for functionality. With its flexible shapes and slim dimensions, the sofa’s style reflects the designer's love for the 18th-century English furniture design. The design communicates Wanscher’s fondness for refined detailing. The sofa features a relatively simple lattice construction, its elements supporting one another. The slender dimensions are minimal, the design’s strength achieved instead through a well-conceived structure that includes double center legs for strength. The sofa is as a reimagination of the popular OW149 Colonial Chair from 1949 and is part of the Colonial Series, which also features the OW449 Colonial Coffee Table and the OW149F Colonial Footstool. Support in the seat is made of handwoven canework.
The Colonial Series was designed by Ole Wanscher. Born in 1903, Wanscher studied and eventually worked under Kaare Klint prior to his independent design career. Notably, Wanscher's best known works were designed between the late 1940s and early 1960s, a few years earlier than many other renowned Scandinavian designers. Alongside his career designing furniture, Wanscher also taught at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, helping to shape the work of a later generation. Whereas some of his designs are quite reserved and arguably more traditional with references to pre-modern movements, others can be highly sculptural, delicate, and/or definitively modern.
