JH 507 Armchairs
By Hans Wegner for Johannes Hansen
Description
Listed for sale is a pair of JH 507 dining chair with arms, designed by Hans Wegner, produced by Johannes Hansen. This pair of chairs came from Harvard University and is accompanied by thorough documentation showing the chairs in the original context. The chairs were purchased new in 1965 along with countless other iconic furniture for use in the Countway Library of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. The library is a monumental brutalist form, designed by renowned architect and Harvard professor at the time, Hugh Stubbins. The architect was known for specifying furniture meticulously and frequently used works by Florence Knoll, Hans Wegner, Eero Saarinen, and Nicos Zographos, among others.
These JH 507 chairs are exceptionally rare and were very expensive to produce, using solid oak, which was then sculpted into form and joined with precise wooden joinery.
Both of these chairs were just freshly reupholstered in full grain black leather by a renowned upholstery shop in Chicago.
The price listed includes both chairs. If interested in a larger set, we have some others available, which can be reupholstered with a material of your choice if desired. The chairs measure 24 inches wide by 22 inches deep and 32 inches tall.
Original documentation will be included with the purchase of each chair. This will include a copy of photographs of the library, showing these exact chairs in context, dated 1965 from when the building was completed and photographed.
