By Davis Allen for SOM Design
Inland Steel Occasional Table
This is an Occasional Side / End Table, originally designed by David Allen in 1958. This particular example was produced by Skidmore, Owings, and Merrill (or SOM) Design in the USA in 1958. The table is made entirely of lacquered wood.
This piece came from the collection of Fern Simon in Chicago. The table came directly from the Inland Steel Building. As the story goes (and as is written and documented), the Block family stayed at the Istanbul Hilton hotel and were so blown away by the interiors work that they specifically requested Davis Allen. In that project, there are screens and walls with a similar pattern and this was presumably an homage to the project as a gift to the Block family. Davis Allen went on to do the interiors of Inland Steel alongside Gordon Bunshaft at SOM.
The table measures 22 inches wide, 22 inches long, and 22.25 inches high. This piece does show some wear and has surface blemishes but overall is in good vintage condition. Please see photos.

Furniture arrives curbside, often on the shipping pallet for protection.
Freight shipments can take longer and are more costly than regular mail, but help to prevent damage to furniture during delivery.
