Description

This is arguably one of the rarest and most special furniture works of American modernism. It is Davis Allen's work for Skidmore, Owings, and Merrill (SOM Design), conceived of for the Inland Steel building in Chicago. The building was completed in 1957 and led by SOM Architects Bruce Graham and Walter Netsch. Davis Allen was responsible for much of the interiors and furniture works. This steel mesh lounge chair is one of the most unique and special works that was designed by the firm throughout its history and its believed that there may be as few as eight of them (ever produced).

This example was produced by Treitel Gratz in stainless steel. It is upholstered in fabric by Jack Lenor Larsen. The past owner purchased it in the 1990s from The Armony Show in NY.

The chair measures 29 inches deep, 27 inches wide, and 32 inches high. This piece does show wear from previous use, but overall is in very good to excellent vintage condition. Please see photos.

What should I expect when ordering an item with lead time?

Estimated lead times are shown under "Delivery", above. Read our shipping policy to learn more.

Lead times are estimated based on previous production times from our manufacturing partners, but lead times can change depending on availability and circumstances outside of Rarify's control.

For example: if purchasing an imported or made-to-order product, international shipping and import times depend on many factors. This includes US customs operations, global trade circumstances, and production facilities in other countries.

We will try to fulfill your order as quickly as possible. Our international freight forwarding partners help to take burden off of you during the process of importing; we appreciate your patience while your order is fulfilled.

Purchasing made-to-order is one of the most responsible ways to purchase, as it helps prevent furniture waste on our planet.

Vintage items are typically in-stock in the USA and ready to ship once purchased.

How much does shipping cost?

To see shipping costs, add an item to your cart and proceed to checkout. You'll be able to see costs there.

Do you deliver to NYC?

Yes, in-stock items can often be delivered to NYC quickly by our skilled couriers. Pieces are delivered by hand to your residence. This typically takes 1-2 weeks for items stocked at our warehouse in PA.

What is Freight shipping?

Freight shipping is how most furniture is shipped: secured by hand on a pallet and transported on a truck.

Furniture arrives curbside, often on the shipping pallet for protection.

Freight shipments can take longer and are more costly than regular mail, but help to prevent damage to furniture during delivery.

Is everything authentic?

Rarify's entire collection is evaluated by credentialed experts for authenticity. We strive to only list an item for sale if we're certain it's authentic. Our team reviews every piece.
