Description

This is a 40/4 Side Chair, initially designed by David Rowland in 1964. This particular chair dates to 1979. This iconic form has been praised as one of the most ingenious modern designs of the 20th century, and has been credited for being the first truly stackable chair.
This example is important as it was formerly utilized in Skidmore, Owings, and Merrill’s Chase Manhattan Bank project. The chair maintains its original tags. SOM was the firm that originally helped to make the 40/4 chair a viable product. They ordered 17,000 of them for UIC Chicago, which helped Roland and the product thrive afterward.
The chair has a solid steel sled base, and has a black plastic seat and back. This example was manufactured by GF Business Equipment (part of General Fireproofing Co) in the 1970s. Later, the Howe corporation would come to buy the rights to produce the 40/4.

This chair measures 21 inches deep, 19 inches wide, and 30 inches tall. The seat height is 18 inches. It shows some scratches and scuffs to both the base and the seat, and there are scratches on the paint. Overall, the chair remains in good condition. Please see photos.

What should I expect when ordering an item with lead time?

Estimated lead times are shown under "Delivery", above. Read our shipping policy to learn more.

Lead times are estimated based on previous production times from our manufacturing partners, but lead times can change depending on availability and circumstances outside of Rarify's control.

For example: if purchasing an imported or made-to-order product, international shipping and import times depend on many factors. This includes US customs operations, global trade circumstances, and production facilities in other countries.

We will try to fulfill your order as quickly as possible. Our international freight forwarding partners help to take burden off of you during the process of importing; we appreciate your patience while your order is fulfilled.

Purchasing made-to-order is one of the most responsible ways to purchase, as it helps prevent furniture waste on our planet.

Vintage items are typically in-stock in the USA and ready to ship once purchased.

How much does shipping cost?

To see shipping costs, add an item to your cart and proceed to checkout. You'll be able to see costs there.

Do you deliver to NYC?

Yes, in-stock items can often be delivered to NYC quickly by our skilled couriers. Pieces are delivered by hand to your residence. This typically takes 1-2 weeks for items stocked at our warehouse in PA.

What is Freight shipping?

Freight shipping is how most furniture is shipped: secured by hand on a pallet and transported on a truck.

Furniture arrives curbside, often on the shipping pallet for protection.

Freight shipments can take longer and are more costly than regular mail, but help to prevent damage to furniture during delivery.

Is everything authentic?

Rarify's entire collection is evaluated by credentialed experts for authenticity. We strive to only list an item for sale if we're certain it's authentic. Our team reviews every piece.
