Description

Loll has always been inspired by original design and when they first set out to make an Adirondack chair it had to be their own version. But truly they are just making an iteration of the original Adirondack chair. The one that has always inspired them is the first, the Westport Chair designed by Thomas Lee in 1903 for his summer cottage overlooking Lake Champlain in Westport, NY. The Westport is undeniably the most iconic American outdoor lounge chair and the original design that spawned countless varieties all based on that 11 piece design statement. Lee was motivated to design a comfortable outdoor lounging chair for the purpose of watching summer sunsets over the lake with a drink resting on the arm. (Morning coffee and a newspaper worked wonderfully as well.) Hastily patented in 1905 by Lee’s friend and carpenter, Harry Bunnell, the chair was named the Westport Plank Chair and provided winter work for Bunnell’s company. The chairs sold well and Bunnell went on to manufacture the chairs for resale and continued to do so for more than 20 years.

The chair has an early modern simplicity and a rustic and craftsman appearance that is still viable today more than 100 years later. As a show of respect to Lee’s chair that really started a higher level of outdoor comfort and design, and now more than 10 years into Loll, they felt it was time to honor Lee’s chair with a Loll version that stays true to the original. Using recycled plastic instead of knot free clear wood, and incorporating their lock block hidden fastening system, they put forth their contribution to this iconic outdoor chair. Perhaps for the first time in the chairs history they also added a bottle opener under the right arm to better fit its purpose. As they researched and studied and prototyped this chair, they discovered so many parallels between its history and the company that it almost seems like Thomas Lee actually created a gift that keeps giving. They hope to continue that by sharing the Loll Westport Chair for another 100 years.

What should I expect when ordering an item with lead time?

Estimated lead times are shown under "Delivery", above. Read our shipping policy to learn more.

Lead times are estimated based on previous production times from our manufacturing partners, but lead times can change depending on availability and circumstances outside of Rarify's control.

For example: if purchasing an imported or made-to-order product, international shipping and import times depend on many factors. This includes US customs operations, global trade circumstances, and production facilities in other countries.

We will try to fulfill your order as quickly as possible. Our international freight forwarding partners help to take burden off of you during the process of importing; we appreciate your patience while your order is fulfilled.

Purchasing made-to-order is one of the most responsible ways to purchase, as it helps prevent furniture waste on our planet.

Vintage items are typically in-stock in the USA and ready to ship once purchased.

Do you deliver to NYC?

Yes, in-stock items can often be delivered to NYC quickly by our skilled couriers. Pieces are delivered by hand to your residence. This typically takes 1-2 weeks for items stocked at our warehouse in PA.

What is Freight shipping?

Freight shipping is how most furniture is shipped: secured by hand on a pallet and transported on a truck.

Furniture arrives curbside, often on the shipping pallet for protection.

Freight shipments can take longer and are more costly than regular mail, but help to prevent damage to furniture during delivery.
