Description

The S-Chair has a dark varnished metal structure; the iconic original version is upholstered with marsh straw; alternatively, it is available in wicker or with a fixed cover chosen from a selection of leathers or fabrics from the collection. For the marsh straw version, the weaving is done entirely by hand: a meticulous procedure that requires more than 6 hours of craftsmanship. An emblem of contemporary design, the chair can be found in the permanent collections of the world’s greatest museums, from the Triennale in Milan to the MoMA in New York.

S-Chair was designed by Tom Dixon. Dixon's restless and rebellious nature led him to abandon his studies so that he could explore his own creativity and a personal means of expression using recycled materials. In those years, he opened the laboratory “Space”: a think tank, an independent open space where artists and designers could collaborate together and influence each other creatively and design-wise. It was during this fertile period that Tom Dixon began collaborating with Cappellini, for whom he created the iconic S-Chair. In the 1990s, “Space” was transformed into a full-fledged design studio: Dixon became recognized as a top-level designer and his name started spreading rapidly amongst internationally acclaimed brands. Dixon’s works are included in the permanent collections of the most important museums, including the Victoria & Albert Museum, the MoMa in New York and Tokyo, and the Centre Pompidou.

What should I expect when ordering an item with lead time?

Estimated lead times are shown under "Delivery", above. Read our shipping policy to learn more.

Lead times are estimated based on previous production times from our manufacturing partners, but lead times can change depending on availability and circumstances outside of Rarify's control.

For example: if purchasing an imported or made-to-order product, international shipping and import times depend on many factors. This includes US customs operations, global trade circumstances, and production facilities in other countries.

We will try to fulfill your order as quickly as possible. Our international freight forwarding partners help to take burden off of you during the process of importing; we appreciate your patience while your order is fulfilled.

Purchasing made-to-order is one of the most responsible ways to purchase, as it helps prevent furniture waste on our planet.

Vintage items are typically in-stock in the USA and ready to ship once purchased.

Do you deliver to NYC?

Yes, in-stock items can often be delivered to NYC quickly by our skilled couriers. Pieces are delivered by hand to your residence. This typically takes 1-2 weeks for items stocked at our warehouse in PA.

What is Freight shipping?

Freight shipping is how most furniture is shipped: secured by hand on a pallet and transported on a truck.

Furniture arrives curbside, often on the shipping pallet for protection.

Freight shipments can take longer and are more costly than regular mail, but help to prevent damage to furniture during delivery.

Is everything authentic?

Rarify's entire collection is evaluated by credentialed experts for authenticity. We strive to only list an item for sale if we're certain it's authentic. Our team reviews every piece.
