D1 Cube Armchair
By Peter Keler for Tecta
Description
When Peter Keler designed the D1 Cube Armchair in 1925, he followed a radical approach: the clarity of the cube should be transferred to a piece of furniture - especially one that was designed for comfort. Keler designed the cube chair as a prototype at the State Bauhaus Weimar. It was intended for the “red cube” house from 1923, which was designed by his friend, the architect Farkas Mólnar. The first prototype of the D1 still exists today: Covered with red leather, the original can be seen in the Kragstuhl Museum, Lauenförde. After years of intensive collaboration with Tecta, Peter Keler decided to donate his prototype to the collection. By the way, a strange detail is visible here: a seam is visible below the armrest. Even today, our Bauhaus models are based exactly on the proportions of the originals.
Peter Keler is one of the central figures who had a lasting impact on Tecta's Bauhaus DNA. Peter Keler worked for around seven years starting in 1975 as a “tecta employee,” as he described himself. In 1981 he wrote to Paul Klee's son, Felix Klee in Bern, a German-Swiss art historian and painter, and signed the letter from Lauenförde with “tecta -new bauhaus” as the sender. In doing so, he unwittingly laid the foundation for the current BauhausNowhaus edition, with which the company shows that the ideas of the Bauhaus are still as relevant today as they once were and should be continually developed further.
