CH163 Sofa

The CH163 Sofa was designed was designed for three people in 1965 and relaunched in 2013 when it caught the attention of Carl Hansen & Søn while looking through the architect’s photo and model archives. Despite a geometric appearance, the sofa is a soft and comfortable sofa with raised sides and simple but distinctive details. This stringent design demonstrates how even a small detail can become so significant that it goes on to become the furniture’s hallmark. The special feature is the enlarged cover caps in the armrests which conceal the screws in the upper part of the characteristically shaped legs that hold the armrest upholstery to the wooden frame. The wooden cap is designed larger for decorative reasons, moved slightly back from the front of the legs and placed so that the grain is in the transversal direction of the leg’s wood grains. The solid wooden frame is firmly upholstered. The pillows have down wrapped around the core foam, which allowed the ability to add softness and good comfort to the geometric form.
The sofa is available in two sizes: CH162 as a two-seater and CH163 as a three-seater.

The CH160 sofas were designed by Hans Wegner. Wegner is arguably the most important figure in Danish modern furniture design. Early in his life, Wegner apprenticed under a cabinetmaker and was eventually educated at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. In 1938, he worked on furniture for Arne Jacobsen and Erik Moller's Aarhus City Hall. By 1943, he opened his own design studio, where he would design some of his most famous works. The peacock chair was designed in 1947 for Johannes Hansen and thanks to innovations from designers such as Eames and Aalto, bent plywood shell chairs by Wegner began in 1948. Both the Wishbone and Round Chair were in introduced in 1949 and have since become two of his best recognized works. Over his career, Wegner designed over 500 different chairs and countless other pieces including tables and cabinets. The attention to joinery, craft, and material have helped to make his name so revered.
