The Bookworm was designed by prolific British-Isreali industrial designer Ron Arad. In 1994, Kartell began producing the design in extruded PVC and later ABS, although it was originally designed in metal.
By collaborating with Kartell, a design company which became famous for its innovation in plastics during the mid-20th century, Arad was able to translate the object into a more practical product for consumers. It weighed less, cost less, and could be manufactured more easily using plastics.
An eye-catching and playful shelf, the Bookworm represents Kartell's history of innovation in plastics, Arad's obsession with experimentation and technology, and the translation of provocative designs into consumer products during the 20th century.
