Kaiser Idell Table Lamp
By Christian Dell for Fritz Hansen
Description
The unmistakable Kaiser Idell table lamp (officially the 6631-T Luxus) is an iconic, historical and widely-recognized work of industrial design by Christian Dell (1893-1974), foreman of the metal workshop at the important Bauhaus School in Germany.
Dell worked at the Bauhaus alongside Walter Gropius, known to be one of history's most influential masters of architecture and design, among others. Dell’s industrial design language reflects a focus on pure geometries, precise engineering and mastery of crafted materials—in this case, precisely formed metals.
The Kaiser Idell lamps are true artifacts of Bauhaus design with a fascinating back story, and they continue to remain practical and timeless. The table lamp’s patented base swivels, and adjustments allow the user to position the lamp’s arm in multiple positions.
The term “Idell” is a reference to Dell's last name. “Kaiser” is a reference to the original manufacturer of the lamp, however authentic examples are now produced to the designer's original specifications only by Fritz Hansen—one of Denmark's oldest and most respected fine furniture makers. Fritz Hansen also produces many of Arne Jacobsen’s most sought-after designs, such as the famous Egg Chair.
This corded table lamp measures 16.8 inches tall.
