Desta, or Deutsche Stahlmöbel, was an early German furniture company named for the items that it produced, quite literally ‘German Steel Furniture’

This is a very important design as it was one of the first cantilever armchairs ever designed during the Bauhaus period. To find an original that is still in existence is essentially unheard of.

Mendelsohn was the second German architect to design tubular steel furniture for Desta. His SS 34 chair is comprised of one continuous closed steel tube that also forms the armrests. The tube does not follow the entire contour of the chair, differing from later tubular steel forms that were to come. For this model, the seat and backrest are made of upholstered wooden panels.

Mendelsohn designed the Einstein Tower in Potsdam in 1922 while working as an architect. Desta was sold to Thonet in 1933 and the the SS 34 became part of their product range, but it was attributed to Desta owner Anton Lorenz.

This chair measures 22.5 inches deep, 21.7 inches wide, and 30.7 inches high. We have intentionally left this piece in its original condition to showcase its history. There is ample patina and rust on the frame, and the fabric shows spots and signs of age. Overall, this chair is in good condition.
